About the Artist - Andy Burgess 2022

Andy Burgess is a British born artist who now lives in Tucson, Arizona. Burgess is internationally known for his renditions of modernist and mid-century architecture, panoramic cityscape paintings, and elaborate mosaic-like collages made from vintage, found and hand-painted papers. Since 2000 Burgess has been represented by The Cynthia Corbett Gallery in London. His work is reguarly exhibited at International Art Fairs such as Expo Chicago and Art Miami and is to be found in many important art collections worldwide. This webside has been created to exclusively showcase Burgess’s most personal work, that of his abstract collage. Collage has been a mainstay of his artistic practice since the mid 1990’s and is central to his artistic sensibility.

In a recent statement, Burgess says of his work:

“My small constructivist inspired collages explore the intersection between painting and collage, a theme that can be traced back to cubism and the works of Picasso and Braque. In the painted paper collages and the book linen and vintage paper collages, I explore geometry, symmetry and asymmetrical composition contrasting hard edged shapes with tactile pieces of paper that often display evidence of age and distress, such as tears, scratches and dog-eared corners. I use a mixture of found, vintage and hand painted papers which are chosen for their color, patina and tactile qualities. The brush marks and surface textures of the paper give the pieces their sensory qualities and the color palette is carefully modulated to be both evocative and harmonious. I often describe my collages as “Pop Geometry” referencing early Twentieth Century art movements, such as Bauhaus and Dada and Russian Constructivism as well as post war Pop Art and the Golden Age of American graphic design from the 1920’s-1960’s.”
